TIN Registration: Conversion of NIC to TIN

It has been clarified by the Inland Revenue Department (IRD) that the proposal made by the State Minister Ranjith Siyabalapitiya earlier this year to use the National Identity Card (NIC) number as Tax Identification Number (TIN) is not planned for immediate implementation. According to the department, this was merely a proposal made by the government, and no concrete decision has been taken regarding this transition.

The NIC number is currently being used by the department to assist the registration process, and its usage is limited to use the details mentioned in the NIC without replacing the Numbers.

It was further revealed that there have been no changes to the criteria for registering all citizens over the age of 18 years. However, the given deadline has been lifted due to the economic challenges faced by the public. Therefore, the focus of the IRD has shifted more towards facilitating the TIN registering process rather than imposing new regulations.
